BEDBUGS
Bought back an unwanted guest in to the bedroom?
Bedbugs are becoming increasingly common throughout Reading, Newbury, Basingstoke and throughout the UK and we see a high incidence of infestations in and around Berkshire.
What is a Bedbug?
Bedbugs are small shield-shaped insects which feed upon fresh human blood, bedbugs are nocturnal insects and will come out to feed when you are asleep, these bedbugs will mainly be found within the bedroom and sleeping areas of homes hence the name bedbugs.
Where do bedbugs come from and how do they get into my home?
Bedbugs can be picked up from a range of sources, anywhere from the soft furnishings on public transport around Reading to hotel rooms. They can travel in clothing and luggage and can survive several months without feeding, making them very successful pests.
Once in my home where will bedbugs be found and how will I know I have them?
As previously stated, bedbugs will mainly be found around bedrooms and sleeping and resting areas. They will hide in cracks and crevices and are able to fit in gaps as thin as the width of a piece of paper. Early signs of a bedbug infestation are bites, these bites will usually be grouped together or in a short, straight line as bedbugs will feed in groups. Bedbug bites will usually be found on the upper parts of the body, such as the arms, shoulders and even around the neck area. The bites can be highly irritable and itchy due to the enzymes released in their saliva when feeding on a host. Another indication of a bedbug infestation is ’spotting’ on bed linen and mattresses, these are small blood spots or bedbug scat and can be all over the bedsheets and around the seams of the mattress or other harbourage areas.
What is the best way to deal with your bedbug infestation?
Sprays are the most effective treatment for bedbugs; we can treat individual rooms or the entire home depending on the severity of the infestation. If needed, we will take apart bed frames to make sure all areas are treated.
At Abbey Pest Control we will visit your home beforehand to survey the property and establish the best course of treatment. In order for the treatment to be successful there are a few essential pre-treatment protocols to carry out, these are as follows:
Essential pre-treatment protocols to carry out:
All furniture must be emptied before it can be sprayed. You will need to ensure wardrobes, bedside tables, chest of drawers, and anything stored under the bed is cleared out and ready for treatment.
All clothing must be taken out of the room and will need to be either frozen or washed on a high heat, this will ensure any adult bedbugs or unhatched eggs are killed and will help to eliminate the problem.
All rooms that are being treated must be vacuumed thoroughly beforehand. This will help to remove any live bedbugs, nymphs and unhatched eggs and increase the effectiveness of the treatment. The vacuum bag must then be thrown out, if you have a bag-less vacuum you will need to thoroughly clean it.
Other small items removed from rooms can be frozen if possible, this will help to kill off any bedbugs that may be hiding within them.
We will then use a residual spray to treat your home, all the rooms will be sprayed including the ceilings, walls, floors, any furniture in the room as well as the bed and the mattress. The bed may be taken apart if it is possible to do. If you have a divan bed we may have to remove the material on the bottom in order to spray inside the bed, a thorough treatment is the only way to ensure all breeding adults and their unhatched eggs are eradicated.
After treatment it is important you observe the following:
To remain out of the property or any treated rooms for 4 hours after treatment
To not vacuum, mop or wipe down any treated surfaces for 2-3 weeks
After a period of 2-3 weeks, all treated rooms will need to have a thorough vacuum. The vacuum should then be emptied and thoroughly cleaned.
