Queen wasps venture out of hibernation in spring and source a suitable location to start their nests. At the start of the nest lifecycle it will be as small as a golf ball, containing a few wasps who get about busily expanding the nest and the colony. These nests grow exponentially and by the end of the summer can contain thousands of wasps. At the end of the season the drone wasps leave the nest in search of food and become increasingly aggressive. 

 

Wasps will build their nests in a range of places, from bushes and sheds to lofts and playhouses and can come as a nasty shock to an unsuspecting resident.
