Toxic and Non-Toxic Methods of Pest Control

When it comes to pest control there are 2 different methods that a pest controller can use to eradicate a rat, mouse or squirrel infestation: toxic and non-toxic. The toxic method is the use of poisons to kill off the rodents in or around a building, the toxic approach can sometimes be a quick solution but also comes with the most risk, these risks can be:
- Rats or mice dying within wall cavities and underneath floors. This can lead to maggots, flies and unpleasant smells as the rodent may be inaccessible. These smells and side effects can last a few weeks and create a nuisance for the home or business owner.
- Poisoned rodents can also die outside or within reach of other animals. This can risk poisoning a non-target animal, mainly birds of prey, foxes or even domestic pets. Any toxic treatment carried out by a pest control technician needs to be monitored regularly to look for carcases, especially if the treatment is external as the rodents need to be disposed of appropriately.
The non-toxic approach to pest control can take a little longer to resolve. Rats particularly suffer from neophobia, a fear of unfamiliar objects in their environment, so they can be a little hesitant when traps are involved to initially explore them. With the use of motion cameras and tracking dust we can see any runs and tunnels they may be using to utilise the traps to the fullest. As the traps are all placed within our access, no rodent will die out of our reach so all carcasses can be collected, removed and disposed of which significantly reduces the chances of maggots and flies being an issue.
Non-toxic treatments, in our opinion, should always be used for house mice and squirrel issues, they are sporadic feeders which means they will feed in several different locations over a night, therefore trapping for mice is the quickest and simplest way to eradicate a house mice issue. Squirrels travel over a wider area and the risk to other wildlife is greater where a poisoned squirrel is concerned.
With either toxic or non-toxic treatments, the key to sorting any internal pest issue is the source of entry, here at Abbey Pest Control this is our main goal, to not only eradicate your infestation but to help you reduce the changes of further infestations taking place.
